“Truth, a rare commodity”

Jesus told us, “I am the Way, the TRUTH, and the Life.” He is not a truth, He is THE TRUTH! Jesus can’t lie! He would always tell the truth and do it in love.

Throughout the month of February we have been talking about humble speech. Humble speech must include speaking truth all the time. Our word to others must be true and trusted.

James 5:12

But most of all, my brothers and sisters, never take an oath, by heaven or earth or anything else. Just say a simple yes or no, so that you will not sin and be condemned.

Today’s verse James he is teaching the same message Jesus taught on the Sermon on the Mount found in Matthew 5. Vows were important at that time and in that culture. Many times people would swear by something to confirm their word and commitment.

Jesus taught and James is reinforcing His words. Our word should be enough to prove our commitment. If telling the truth becomes our norm there will be no need to make vows or promises. If we say something it should be true! Of course there are times when things are out of our control but we should then be quick to acknowledge it and make it right.

Humble speech must include honesty and commitment. As Jesus and James tells us, let our yes be yes and our no be no. Anything else is considered evil in the eyes of God. In Proverbs 6 we are told God hates seven things, two of the things God hates is pride and lying. My friends we need to be careful with our words. You may tell someone something with good intentions but can’t follow through. Your good intentions have the power to hurt, be careful!

Let the words of your mouth and the meditation of your heart be pleasing unto the Lord!
