“The Power of Words”

In the beginning God, Then God said “let there be light” and there was light. Most of us know this truth, God spoke the world into existence. Words have power beyond what we can imagine. If we fast forward thousands of years later we see Jesus standing in front of Lazarus’s tomb. He had been dead for four days but Jesus spoke three words, “Lazarus come out” and he came out of that tomb. Jesus had risen him from the dead simply by speaking.

In today’s scripture we are told, we have the power of life and death as we speak. Honestly, do we give much thought about the words we speak most of the time? The writer of Proverbs also gives us a warning.

Proverbs 18:21

The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences.

The moment I read today’s verse I was reminded of a scripture similar to this one. It is also found in Proverbs 10:9, Too much talk leads to sin. Be sensible and keep your mouth shut. I can remember the first time I read this particular verse thinking “how rude”. Because most of you know I like to talk. Therefore just as the scriptures warn us, I find myself in trouble.

I am thankful for the opportunities God gives me to speak life into people that are hurting. But unfortunately I have witnessed the consequences of speaking too much. As followers of Jesus we are called to be humble, to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus. To do so we must be aware and careful with our words. I have said this on many occasions, if we can’t say something in love we are better off staying quiet.

Humble speech is a choice but it takes discernment and sensitivity. The Word of God tells us that Jesus said nothing on His own, He only said what the Father led Him to say. God has given us His Spirit to lead and guide us. When we walk and rely on His Spirit we too can share the Father’s heart with others. We will speak words of life and blessing and avoid being foolish.

Father, I pray for myself and all who will read today’s devotion. May we all rest in Your presence, trust in Your promises and walk in Your power so that our words will be a blessing and build others up. Thank You for the opportunities You give us to be Your partner. Continue to bless my brothers and sisters as they diligently seek after You!
