“The Ingredients for a Godly Family”
We will never honor God in our families without a willingness to humble ourselves. From the very beginning God ordained the family and blessed it. Throughout the scriptures we see God using the foundation of the family to help us understand His Kingdom. Think about it, Jesus is the groom, we are the bride. We are called the family of God, as followers of Jesus we are brothers and sisters with one Father. The family is important to God and He wants all of us to glorify Him through it!
Before we look at today’s scripture I want to remind us of a few promises the Lord has given us. We are told “NOTHING is impossible in Christ Jesus.” We are also told “He is working in us giving us the desire and power to do what pleases Him.” There are many others but I want to share one more; God assures us “when we walk in His Spirit we will not fulfill the lust of our flesh.” Another way to say this; “if we humble ourselves under His Mighty Power we can accomplish anything!”
Now with all of this said let’s take a look at today’s scripture and instructions. I am hoping all who are reading this desires to have a Godly family!
Colossians 3:18-20
Wives, submit to your husbands, as is fitting for those who belong to the Lord.
19 Husbands, love your wives and never treat them harshly.
20 Children, always obey your parents, for this pleases the Lord.
Notice how the Lord addresses each part of the family. Husbands, wives and children all have a part to play. Each individual is responsible and accountable to God. We are not responsible for the other persons actions only our own responses. Before we look at the individual responsibilities let us remember, God is the head of the family. If you read verse 17, we are told; whatever you do, do it as a representative of the Lord giving thanks to God the Father!
Wives submit to your husbands, ladies do you realize that as children of God we are called to submit to God and one another. This goes back to having a humble spirit trusting God in all things. Did you know that part of the curse given to Eve and all women is to want to control their husbands. Therefore submission does not come naturally, you will need to walk in the Spirit and let Him do the work through you. If you want to honor God in your marriage and family you will need to be humble and submit.
Husbands love your wives, this is not a suggestion! Needless to say I can speak with a little more authority concerning this subject. I have been married for 36 years (wow, that is a really long time LOL) But over these years I have learned a few things. The most important is this, when I love my wife as Christ loves me she has absolutely NO problem submitting to my leadership. Your wife craves love like we crave respect. We don’t love our wives based on their attitudes or actions, we love our wives because it glorifies our Father in heaven. But trust me when you do love her as Christ loves you, you will reap the benefits!
Children obey your parents, did you know this is the first command followed with a promise. You will be blessed if you honor and obey your parents. There are probably not a lot of children reading this devotion. But nevertheless this needs to be included in the ingredients that make for a Godly family.
There is so much more that can be said and taught on this subject. But today let’s focus on humbling ourselves under the mighty power of God so that we can submit, love and obey to create Godly families! May the Lord bless you as you diligently seek after Him!!
