“No Humility, No Sacrifice”

I personally have been challenged as we study the subject of humility. I have also been surprised by the overwhelming positive responses I received from many of you. Many times when the subject of humility comes up people get uneasy or defensive. Thank you for your openness to learn and receive the truth of God’s Word.

Today’s scripture is what I believe is the foundation of being humble. Jesus was our perfect example of humility. If Jesus did not decide to humble Himself before God we would not have a sacrifice. The moment in the Garden Jesus said; “not My will but Your will be done” He decided to humble Himself and finish the work of His Father. We get a glimpse of this in today’s scripture.

Philippians 2:5-8

You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had. 6 Though he was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. 7 Instead, he gave up his divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, 8 He humbled Himself in obedience to God

and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

Before we jump into today’s scripture let’s be reminded of yesterday’s. In verse 3 the Apostle Paul began, “don’t be selfish, be humble.” He then gives us a quick definition of what it may look like. We should think of others better than ourselves, looking out for the interests of others. Humility is certainly connected to a selfless attitude.

Therefore in verse 5 we read these words, “you MUST have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” Honestly this is not a new word, Jesus taught this throughout His teaching. The Apostle Paul only said it in a way that is crystal clear, no misinterpretation. He then gave the example of the life of Christ. I think at times we forget that before Jesus came as a baby, a human being, He was seated next to the Father. He left the place of glory and came to this earth. He was willing to give up His divine privileges and took upon Himself the position of a humble slave… WOW!! Stop, take a moment and think about this. Remember, Jesus is God, He knew what was about to take place. He gave up everything to come and save people who would mock, beat and finally crucify Him. He humbled Himself in obedience to God and died on a cross as a criminal. Through His humility He became the perfect sacrifice of the world providing reconciliation back to the Father.

We are told to have this same attitude Jesus had. To give up our own way and privileges for the sake of others so that they will know and glorify the Father. Jesus is our example, the Spirit lives inside every child of God giving them everything they need to humble themselves under the mighty power of God. Will you submit to His Spirit and willingly humble yourself as Christ did or will you fight His Spirit to do your own thing. The choice is yours, humility will lead to exaltation, pride will lead to destruction.
