“Guard my Lips”

Psalm 46:1

God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble.

Philippians 2:13

For God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.

Take a few moments to meditate on these two verses. Invite the Holy Spirit to help you truly understand the power contained in these two verses. Trust me you will need it as we look at today’s devotion.

Our words have the power of life and death. Scripture teaches us that we are accountable for the things we say. Today we look at a simple prayer spoken by King David.

Psalm 141:2-3

Accept my prayer as incense offered to you, and my upraised hands as an evening offering. 3 Take control of what I say, O Lord, and guard my lips.

David is coming before the Lord in prayer and worship. He is pleading for the Lord’s direction and help. David learned when He was young man he needed the Lord. Therefore we can find him on countless occasions petitioning the Lord for help.

I want us to look closely at verse 3. David asks the Lord “take control of what I say and guard my lips.” The scriptures make it clear that as human beings, in our flesh we can’t control our tongues. Remember James told us, if any man could control his tongue he would be perfect. So here we see David asking God for help.

Now go back and read the verses I shared first. God is available, ready and willing to help those who diligently seek Him. He is also giving us the desire and power to do what pleases Him. Therefore through the Lord’s help and power we can speak words of life and blessings. But we MUST be willing to give the Lord control over our lips. If we humble our words before God our words will be His words! Let’s be honest we would stay out of a lot of needless problems.
