“Do what is Right”

“Do what is Right”

I would think this is a very obvious statement especially in the Christian community. Some may see it as legalistic but most who are reading this will agree. On several occasions I have said, “if we didn’t learn anything else while reading God’s Word and just did what we already know life would be better and God would be honored.”

Today we read from the Book of Micah. Micah was a prophet of God therefore the words he spoke and wrote are the words of God. God is addressing the Israelites, His chosen people. They are living and walking in rebellion again. A few verses before today’s scripture God ask an interesting question. “O My people, what have I done to you? What have I done to make you tired of Me? Answer me!” In God’s perfection and grace He is asking this question. He then reminds His people of His faithfulness towards them. He then proceeds to tell them these words!

Micah 6:8

No, O people, the Lord has told you what is good, and this is what He requires of you: to do what is right, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

When I read this verse one thing really sticks out for me. “The Lord has told you what is good.” Yes, this is the Old Testament but throughout it God tells us what is good. God told His people what was required. From the very beginning even in the garden God was clear of His expectations and the consequences. Remember His instructions, don’t eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you do you will die! As I said the instructions were clear, direct and completely understandable. God has always been clear about the things that matter most to Him. He leaves no room for confusion.

We read, “do what is right” again God has told them what is good. God told them how they could honor Him. He told them love mercy think about what that means. To extend love, grace and forgiveness to others. How do we do this? By walking humbly before God. We acknowledge that we are nothing without Him.

The beginning of this New Year I found myself praying about doing something that I already knew was good and beneficial for my life. But honestly I didn’t really want to do it so I thought I would pray about it. You know I would seek God to receive directions, (very spiritual.) God didn’t give me direction so therefore I thought well I better not do it with no firm direction from God. But then I read today’s verse, this is not a new verse just one I have not read for a while. But the moment I read it I heard loud and clear, “I told you do what is good! Do what is right!” I didn’t need to seek God to do what I already knew was right. My friends we just need to do what we already know is right.

I was also reminded of one of my foundational life verse: Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you everything you need. God is good, faithful and true all the time. If I walk humbly with Him, He will direct my steps. I will not only know what He wants me to do, I will be excited to do it!

My brothers and sisters let us choose to do what is right for the glory of our Father in heaven! May the Lord bless you as you diligently seek after Him!!
