“Become like little children”
Matthew 18:1-4
About that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who is greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven?” 2 Jesus called a little child to him and put the child among them. 3 Then he said, “I tell you the truth, unless you turn from your sins and become like little children, you will never get into the Kingdom of Heaven. 4 So anyone who becomes as humble as this little child is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven.
At first glance this is an extremely interesting comment made by Jesus, especially during this time in history. Children were not seen as precious, if you remember at one point the disciples were attempting to keep the children away from Jesus. At this time children were meant to be seen not heard. But like many other people who the world rejected Jesus loved and called to Himself!
At one point the disciples were arguing about who would be the greatest in God’s Kingdom. John and James even asked Jesus if they could sit at His right hand in the highest honor. Today we read the disciples asking Jesus again, who is the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven? I assure you they were not expecting Jesus’s answer. Jesus calls a child to Himself, He says; “unless you become like this child you are not even getting into heaven.” WOW!! What a statement the King of all kings made!
The statement is very similar to yesterday’s scripture, Jesus said, unless you give up your own way you can not follow Him. Understand Jesus was not talking about being childish like the disciples were doing (arguing over petty issues). Jesus was telling them and us to be childlike with humble, sincere and trusting hearts. A small child will jump off a high table into his daddy’s arms because of trust. Jesus calls us to this kind trust and obedience.
There are to many times in our life we know what the word of God says and asks for and yet we evaluate and question before we even consider obeying. That is not childlike faith. Of course, if we are uncertain what God is calling us to do we should pray and seek the Lord for clarity. Unfortunately as I said we know what to do and because we don’t really want to do it we look for excuses (all in the Name of Jesus of course). My friends we must let God transform our hearts and minds so that we will be willing to walk in humility, trusting and obeying His will. God is a GREAT Father, He loves us and wants the very best for us. Come to Him today like a little child trusting that He will guide you down the best pathway of your life!! Blessings!!
