“Be Careful”

Throughout the Bible we are given promises with conditions followed by warnings. Funny how human nature will read the promises but ignore the conditions and the warnings. Unfortunately when we do, it creates problems in our lives.

Today’s scripture is a warning that follows a popular and repeated promise given to all who are willing to trust in the Lord with all your hearts and seek His will in all you do. The Lord promises everyone who is willing to do this, He will show you the best path to take. So many times in this process our desires and pride get in the way and we do exactly what we are told not to do. We depend on our own understanding forsaking trusting God. This is why the writer of Proverbs gives us this warning.

Proverbs 3:7-8

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. Instead, fear the Lord and turn away from evil. 8 Then you will have healing for your body and strength for your bones.

Since the beginning of creation man has been impressed with himself. We are taught to look out for yourself, to take care of yourself, to love yourself! None of these things are necessarily bad until we exalt them over God and everyone else. Even the church will take the words of Jesus, “love your neighbor as yourself”and twist them. When Jesus taught this He was telling us to love our neighbors as ourselves because He already knew we loved ourselves. Jesus knew as sinful, human beings we were selfish and self-centered. This is why the writer of Proverbs gives us this warning.

Don’t be impressed with your own wisdom. When we place value on our own wisdom it will lead us down a dangerous and destructive path. I have served at churches that put agendas together and then ask God to bless them. God is already at work within the church and within your personal life. Our responsibility is to rest in His presence, trust in His promises and walk in His power. When we do He will lead us down the best pathway and we will be blessed. The moment we trust in human wisdom we open the door for satan and evil. Did you notice the incredible promise we are given here. When we trust in God’s wisdom, fear Him and turn away from evil. We will receive healing and strength for our bodies.

God is crystal clear; “His ways are not our ways, His thoughts are not our thoughts.”  Therefore if we want to glorify Him we must trust in His wisdom not our own. My friends, don’t ignore this warning! Instead let us; Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek His will in all you do, and He will show you which path to take.
