“Abundant Mercy” Day 2

One day King David made a decision to stay home when it was time to go into the battle. Because of his decision to stay home (which didn’t seem like a big deal) he made one bad decision after another. David slept with Bathsheba, manipulated and eventually killed her husband and lied about it. Bathsheba was pregnant so David could not hide his sin.

Approximately a year later David was confronted by the prophet Nathan. He recognized his sin and confessed. Today we read some of the words David said to God. They are powerful and they are as useful today as they were when David spoke them.

Psalm 51:1-2

Have mercy on me, O God, because of your unfailing love. Because of your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. 2 Wash me clean from my guilt. Purify me from my sin.

It would be extremely beneficial for you to read the entire chapter. We all make decisions that do not honor God, this is a great example of true confession and repentance.

David begins by asking God for mercy, trusting in the Lord’s unfailing love. Remember the definition of mercy; compassion shown to an offender or not receiving what we deserve. This is a huge request, in the law, David would have been sentenced to death. Therefore David’s only hope was for God to grant him mercy. He then seeks the Lord’s forgiveness and to blot out his sins. He was asking God not to hold his sin against him. He also petitioned God to wash him clean, take away the guilt, make him pure. Seriously, that is a bold prayer for committing adultery and murder. God heard David’s prayer and forgave him. Of course there were consequences of his decisions but God forgave him.

My friends what have you done or doing right now that you feel is unforgivable? I want to encourage you, cry out to God. Lord have mercy on me! God’s unfailing love has not changed, He is compassionate and wants to forgive you. This is the reason God sent Jesus to die for the world, forgiveness, freedom and salvation. You do not have to live in shame, guilt and regrets. God is inviting you to come into His presence this moment. Don’t delay, recognize your  rebellion, confess, repent and be set free!

1 John 1:9

But if we confess our sins to him, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all wickedness.
