“Sowing and Reaping Compassion”

Luke 6:36-38

You must be compassionate, just as your Father is compassionate. 37 “Do not judge others, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn others, or it will all come back against you. Forgive others, and you will be forgiven. 38 Give, and you will receive. Your gift will return to you in full—pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, running over, and poured into your lap. The amount you give will determine the amount you get back.”

This morning I decided to jump right into the scripture. I didn’t think we needed any commentary. Jesus is delivering the Sermon on the Mount.  During this sermon Jesus addresses many different issues. If you take the time to read this sermon you will quickly see, Jesus was not only teaching the fulfillment of the law but increasing the expectation.

Here in verse 36 Jesus tells us, “you must be compassionate just as your Father is compassionate.” He then transitions into not judging others but forgiving them. Compassion will generate a heart like Jesus, like our Father in Heaven. In Psalm 145:8 we read; The Lord is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. We too should display this attitude and desire!

Jesus assures all of us that we will receive as we give. When we choose to extend compassion and forgiveness rather than judgment and condemnation God will bless us more than we can imagine. But the opposite is also true. If we are stingy, holding back from extending compassion and forgiveness we will receive the same from our Lord.

Remember freely you have been given, freely give! God’s mercies are new everyday, choose to extend those mercies to someone who may have hurt you. The reward and blessing will be well worth it.
