“The Tongue”

I have learned, my words will be a great indication of my walk with Jesus. I maybe thinking I am doing well until I open my mouth and listen to my words. They will quickly evaluate the condition of my heart. I love this, it is certainly the easiest way to know if I am right with my Lord.

In today’s verses found in the Book of James, we will see the power of our tongues, both for good and evil. We all struggle with our tongue speaking things that is not right. How many times do we need to apologize for something we have said? There is a reason why!

James 3:8-10

But no one can tame the tongue. It is restless and evil, full of deadly poison. 9 Sometimes it praises our Lord and Father, and sometimes it curses those who have been made in the image of God. 10 And so blessing and cursing come pouring out of the same mouth. Surely, my brothers and sisters, this is not right!

I took the liberty to add verse 8 to our devotion this morning. I think it is important to understand that no one can tame the tongue. It is restless, evil and full of deadly poison. This is why on any given occasion we can say something that is hurtful and wrong. But I promise there is hope! Our tongues are connected to our hearts and the heart is connected to our beliefs.

James tells us, “sometimes we praise God but curse those who have been made in the image of God.” He points out the extremes of our words. He is also confirming the words of the writer of proverbs, the tongue has the power of life and death. James also makes it crystal clear it is wrong. As followers of Jesus Christ we are told to be speakers of life. Our words should be used to praise God and build one another up.

Gossip, negative speech and arrogance should not be a part of our vocabulary. If we are walking in the Spirit of God our words will reflect our relationship with Jesus. We will be speaking like our Savior. My friends the only way to speak like Jesus is for each of us to willingly submit our tongues to God. Let Him take control, only God can tame our tongues. Remember what is impossible with man is possible through Christ Jesus!

Therefore when you find yourselves speaking something that does not glorify God or build up others STOP! Make a decision to humble yourself before the Lord and ask Him to search your heart. What is in your heart producing these evil words. You are not a victim you have been set free, you are victorious! This includes the words of your mouth!! Blessings, let us speak life today!
