“Humility Protects Us”
There is a way that seems right to man but it ends with death. The ways of God are not our ways, His thoughts are not are thoughts. If we want to live our lives in a way that will glorify God and be good for ourselves. The only answer is to humble ourselves under God Almighty.
Every command, instruction and word of the Lord is good for us. At times life may not make sense but nevertheless we must be willing to humble ourselves because God sees the big picture. As I write this I am reminded of one of God’s precious promises. And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them. We receive so much hope and assurance in this promise. Why would we resist humbling ourselves before such a loving Father?
Ephesians 5:3-4
Let there be no sexual immorality, impurity, or greed among you. Such sins have no place among God’s people. 4 Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes—these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God.
The Apostle Paul is not writing these verses to scare people. These words are just the reality of those who are in Christ walking in His Spirit. If you are truly walking in the Spirit these things are not going to be in your life. The reason these verses are added in this month’s devotion is revealing the danger of our words. Notice how many of the things listed are associated with our words. And our words reveal our hearts!
Paul tells us, “instead of these things we should be thankful!” Again thankfulness begins in our hearts and than proceeds from our mouth. I believe part of foolish talk is complaining. The moment we complain we are saying God is messing up, I could do better. Think about how foolish that is!
A good way to evaluate whether you are walking in the Spirit or walking in your flesh. Look at the way you spend your money and your time. Be sensitive to the conversations you have. What are they generally about? Seriously this will reveal a lot about your heart and desires.
Humility is powerful, it will grab the Lord’s attention. Your willingness to humble yourself before God will protect you from the enemy and this world. Remember humility is your choice and don’t be fooled you will reap what you sow.
