“Humble Speech”
When we read the Gospels we see Jesus in hundreds of conversations. Some completely spontaneous, others planned and some surprising. But one thing is sure, Jesus always spoke in truth with love. I believe Jesus always thought before he spoke. I think this is something as humans we struggle with, (I know I do).
Jesus did have an advantage over us, He knew the heart, desires and motivation of those He was speaking to. We generally know our desires and planned outcome. But to many times we don’t take into consideration the other person’s feelings or position.
Humble speech will always be a combination of truth and love. A good friend once told me, “truth without love is brutality.” My friends we need to think before we speak. Look at today’s scripture, it is powerful!
Proverbs 12:18-19
Some people make cutting remarks, but the words of the wise bring healing. 19 Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed.
I love the book of Proverbs. It was written to teach the young Jewish boys how to live. I am thankful we can also have these wonderful principles and teachings to help navigate us through life.
Today we read a contrast in our speech. We can use words that will be cutting or can bring healing. I am not going to speak for all of you, I will speak on my own behalf. There are times when I will speak truth but I choose words that maybe cutting rather than healing or the attitude in which I share them will be cutting rather than healing. This is why it is so important to stop and think before speaking. Even if it is just a short moment, ask God for wisdom. We also read, there is a danger in telling someone what they want to hear rather than truth. Sometimes the truth may hurt but it is always better than simply telling someone what they want to hear just to keep the peace. But remember, you can share that truth in love!
Communication is a huge issue in marriages, families, friendships, business and overall life. Throughout God’s word we are given instructions concerning communication. Today’s verse connects wisdom to words of healing. God is willing to give anyone wisdom if they ask. Therefore before entering an important or difficult conversation take a few moments with your Father in Heaven. As followers of Jesus Christ we want to speak words of life and healing!
