“Search me, O God”

God invites and instructs us to humble ourselves under His mighty power. Jesus was super clear when He said, “if anyone wants to follow me they MUST give up their own way.” Humility is not a suggestion it is necessary if we want to follow Jesus.

Once again we are reading the words of King David found in Psalm 139. This Psalm is famous and encouraging because it praises God for His everlasting love towards man even though He has perfect knowledge of man. What I mean is God is fully aware of our short comings and failures and He still deeply loves us. David a man after God’s own heart wants to glorify His Father in heaven therefore He prays this prayer.

Psalm 139:23-24

Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. 24 Point out anything in me that offends you, and lead me along the path of everlasting life.

I personally want to say, this is a bold and courageous prayer. David begins by asking God to search him because only God truly knows what is inside our hearts. Unfortunately too many times we listen to lies and these lies become our truth. These lies produce anxious thoughts and distract us from an intimate relationship with God. But then we read David’s words, “TEST ME.” Wow, really, asking God Almighty to test him. In my experience the testing of the Lord is never fun. I admit it is always beneficial and will lead to blessings but generally comes with some suffering.

My friends, this is part of the humbling process. Is God good, do you believe He has the best for you? If you answer yes, you should be willing to be like David and ask God to search and test your heart. We are instructed every time we participate in the Lord’s Supper to evaluate ourselves. This process should always include asking God to search and test our hearts. Otherwise we evaluate based on our limited knowledge and we will miss God’s best.

It is a new year, first I want to invite and encourage you to attend church today. Don’t forsake the assembly of your brothers and sisters in Christ. Second, invite God through the power of the Holy Spirit to search your hearts. Be willing to respond to God’s great love by humbling yourself before Him. Trust His Word and ways as you begin this new year! I promise you He will lead you along the path of everlasting life! Blessings, see you soon!
