“Spiritual Union”

Jesus told His disciples; “I will be leaving you soon but I will send another Advocate, the Spirit of Truth. He will teach and guide you. You will not be left as orphans, I will be with you. After Jesus’s resurrection He again appeared to His disciples and gave them instructions to share the Good News to all people. His last words; “I will be with you!” Jesus wanted His disciples to know that they would never be alone.

The Holy Spirit is given to each child of God so that there is a constant union between God Almighty and those who believe in Jesus. The Holy Spirit is the Light and Power of God! Therefore before we look at today’s scripture I want to look at a question God asked His people.

Amos 3:3

Can two people walk together without agreeing on the direction?

2 Corinthians 6:14-18

Don’t team up with those who are unbelievers. How can righteousness be a partner with wickedness? How can light live with darkness? 15 What harmony can there be between Christ and the devil? How can a believer be a partner with an unbeliever? 16 And what union can there be between God’s temple and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God said: “I will live in them and walk among them. I will be their God, and they will be my people. 17 Therefore, come out from among unbelievers, and separate yourselves from them, says the Lord.

Don’t touch their filthy things, and I will welcome you. 18 And I will be your Father,

and you will be my sons and daughters,

says the Lord Almighty.”

To receive a little better understanding of today’s reading I added verses fourteen and fifteen. Many people get confused and at times see these verses as contradicting. Jesus tells us to go and tell everyone about Him, share His Good News. But here we read, “separate yourself from unbelievers.” Don’t team up with them. Many translations read; “don’t be unequally yoked with them.” I don’t believe anything Jesus said or taught contradicts itself so what is being taught here?

The moment someone places their faith in Jesus Christ they receive His Spirit and become a new creation. The old has passed away and the new has come. The person makes a decision to accept Jesus’s invitation to come to Him, to take His yoke and walk with Him. Now if I am walking with Jesus, the Light of the World, why would I want to get tangled back up in darkness and wickedness? Yes, Jesus ate with sinners, yes, Jesus touched the lepers but He didn’t live in it. His best friends were those who believed.

In 1 Corinthians 15:33 God’s word tells us; “do not be deceived, bad company corrupts good character.” My friends, it matters who we surround ourselves with. Negative influences, behaviors, and people who don’t walk with Jesus will influence our habits, values and direction. One of the blessings we receive from the Holy Spirit is discernment. It will help and guide us to the people God desires in our lives. The Holy Spirit provides union with God and with those we should be walking with!

Jesus tells us to come and take His yoke, walk in His direction! Are you walking with Jesus? Are the people you are in relationship with walking in the same direction? Can light really live with darkness?
