“A Lesson on Humility”

God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Before the world was spoken into existence we are told about a dispute that took place in heaven. Lucifer the greatest angel in heaven purposed in his heart that he wanted to be God. But even then God was the One and Only Living God. There was no one like Him and there would never be. Therefore Lucifer (satan) was cast out of heaven along with 1/3 of the angels in heaven.

The earth was then created, God spoke everything into existence but He then formed man and breathed life into him. God then created Eve from the rib of Adam and they dwelled in the garden with one another walking with God! But as we know satan entered the garden and tempted Eve. What did he say, “did God really say that?” and “you can be like God.” Eve ate, shared with Adam and both were removed from the garden and sin entered the world.

My point, God does not tolerate pride! In Proverbs 16:18 the Word tells us, pride goes before destruction and haughtiness before the fall! In God’s amazing love and grace He has given us countless warnings concerning pride. In today’s scripture Jesus is giving His disciples and us a lesson and warning to avoid pride.

Luke 10:17-20

When the seventy-two disciples returned, they joyfully reported to him, “Lord, even the demons obey us when we use your name!”18 “Yes,” he told them, “I saw Satan fall from heaven like lightning! 19 Look, I have given you authority over all the power of the enemy, and you can walk among snakes and scorpions and crush them. Nothing will injure you. 20 But don’t rejoice because evil spirits obey you; rejoice because your names are registered in heaven.”

I added verses 17 and 18 to our devotion so that we can have a better understanding of the lesson Jesus is teaching. Also as you read these words remember Jesus always knows the heart and motivation of man.

Jesus sent His disciples out to do ministry, preach the Good News, heal the sick, cast out demons, raise the dead. The disciples experienced success and victory. They came back to Jesus rejoicing and saying, Lord even the demons obeyed us when we use Your name. Read this again, they were successful, they were rejoicing and giving the Lord credit. But Jesus rebukes them, why?

To many great men and women of the scriptures began faithful but at the end of their lives they did not finish faithful. They began experiencing strength, courage, power and success from the Lord. But then they forgot where all of it came from and became prideful, arrogant, taking credit for themselves. Therefore Jesus reminds His disciples, where that power came from and their real reason to rejoice is that their names are written in Heaven.

My friends, things have not changed much as years have past. So many great believers have listened to the lie of yesterday, look at you! Look at what you have done!! Jesus wasn’t rebuking them for rejoicing, the scriptures assure us that all of heaven rejoices when one sinner gives their life to Christ. Jesus is teaching us to be careful and remember that the only reason we have strength, courage and power is because He is with us!

My only true joy comes from this truth, my name is written in heaven! Therefore I will humble myself under the might power of God and when the time is right He will exalt me!

Glory to God, What a Savior!
